If you think the Starbucks drive-thru line seems to be getting longer, you’re likely right.
The coffee chain launched a new initiative in late 2024 to attract more customers, and it appears to be working.
In Yelp’s latest annual ranking of the 50 fastest-growing food and shopping chains, Starbucks isn’t high on the list, ranking 43rd, but last year it wasn’t on the list at all.
Starbucks is not the only — or the fastest — growing coffee chain, though. Restaurants and other food chains comprise most of the 50 fastest-growing chains, and five are coffee shops.
Scooter’s Coffee reigned supreme in this category, ranking 10th.
Scooter’s is a drive-thru coffee chain that’s relatively young, founded in 1998 — 21 years after Starbucks. It opened its first kiosk in Bellevue, Nebraska, and now has more than 850 locations in the U.S., with most being franchises.
Yelp also broke down the fastest-growing food and shopping chains by state. Scooter’s Coffee earned its No. 1 spot in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, Tennessee and Wyoming. (Starbucks ranked No. 1 only in the District of Columbia.)
Yelp’s analysis is based on net new business openings, consumer interest and searches on Yelp. It gauged consumer interest by looking at certain interactions that people have with businesses on Yelp, such as viewing business pages or posting photos or reviews.
What about the other coffee chains in Yelp’s analysis? Here’s how they rank:
- Scooter’s Coffee (ranked No. 10 among all food and shopping chains)
- 7 Brew Coffee (No. 23)
- Caribou Coffee (No. 32)
- Starbucks (No. 43)
- Dunkin’ (No. 50)
