Spot gold hit a record near $5,600 an ounce in January 2026, then fell by nearly a quarter by summer, its worst quarter in 13 years. August 2026 saw a reversal, with gold climbing back above $4,600 and posting its biggest monthly percentage gain since 1999, by one bank’s estimate.

What Americans are actually doing
Gold exchange-traded funds let you own the metal through a brokerage account without ever holding a bar. American investors pulled money out of them in sharp bursts this year. U.S.-listed gold funds shed a net 61 tonnes in the first half, and U.S. investors were net sellers, a sharp reversal from the record buying of 2025.
Physical gold tells the other half of the story. Demand for bars and coins ran about 28% above year-ago levels in the second quarter, according to the World Gold Council, even as the fund money left. The people selling the paper version and the people buying the physical version are not the same, and the second group kept buying.
Why they keep coming back
Inflation has cooled from its peak but still runs above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, and a physical asset can feel like insurance when the cost of everyday life keeps climbing.
Then there is the government’s own balance sheet. Federal debt topped $40 trillion for the first time ever in August. The immediate spark for gold’s jump was a Treasury move to expand its buybacks of longer-term bonds, meant to support market liquidity.
Some investors read it instead as a sign of strain in Washington’s finances and bought gold as a hedge. For those buyers, that is the whole appeal: It is the one asset no government can print more of.
The world’s central banks have leaned the same way. A record 45% of those surveyed by the World Gold Council said they expect to add gold over the next year, citing its performance in a crisis and its role as a long-term store of value.
Where gold fits
Gold is not a flawless asset. It pays no interest and no dividend, and it produces nothing. It earns you nothing while it sits in a vault, which is why it tends to lag when safer assets like bonds pay well.
But the appeal rests on the long run. Over years, gold has tended to hold its value when currencies weaken or confidence in institutions frays, which is what makes it a defensive hedge, a slice of a portfolio rather than its foundation. For many buyers, that slice is the whole point.

It offers gold, silver, platinum and palladium coins and bars delivered directly to your home. Volatility is part of owning gold. Fund investors traded in and out all year, but the people buying bars and coins as one piece of a broader mix were never playing next month’s price. This year’s round trip tested that conviction and, for most of them, confirmed it.
