Amazon dominates the retail landscape thanks to its competitive prices. New research from Profitero, which is owned by NielsenIQ, suggests that the giant is the cheapest option for products in several categories, including appliances, electronics, toys, and tools/home improvement.
In some cases, its competitors are close to 10% more expensive. In other cases (pet supplies, for example), Amazon’s lead narrows to just 1%.
Despite these clear advantages, savings-hungry shoppers have options available to tip the scales in their favor.
How to beat Amazon
Using rebate sites can change these results, Profitero suggests. Sites like Rakuten or RetailMeNot partner with certain retailers to offer cash-back on purchases made through their portal. These percentages can change over time, but Rakuten offers 2% to 10% back at many retailers.
So, even though Amazon may be 1% cheaper, cash-back sites can often deliver better overall pricing.
Use the right credit cards
You can also get cash-back with certain credit cards, and some businesses will offer bonus savings if you meet certain spending thresholds or set up a recurring order — methods that, when combined, can save you more via deal-stacking, experts say.
Amazon is not alone in offering things like speedy delivery. Target touts its same-day delivery, in-store and drive-up order pickup options, and easy, free returns.
Walmart+ said many things make it unique among competitors. Its ability to combine its online and in-store business model allows for unique benefits like having one of the largest assortment of durable products – next to groceries – available online and in its stores. Plus, there’s an option for a Walmart+ membership, which allows early access to Walmart Super Centers and saves its customers time.
Amazon promises great savings, including 5% cash-back for Amazon Prime credit card users on purchases at Amazon, Whole Foods, and Amazon Fresh. But the company argues that the speed and convenience that comes with being an Amazon Prime member is a huge advantage.
For some consumers, checking websites, looking for coupons, and waiting for a rebate check just isn’t worth it. But for others, it can make a big difference, especially this time of year.
