J.P. Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is warning investors that the mighty U.S. economy might be heading toward a recession.

His comment followed the U.S. Department of Labor’s Sept. 9 announcement that it revised its job data estimate for the 12 months that ended in March 2025. The estimate was lowered by 911,000 jobs compared with the department’s initial estimates.

This revision adds to mounting evidence that the job market — if not the broader economy — is declining.

“I think the economy is weakening,” Dimon said during an interview with CNBC. “Whether it’s on the way to recession or just weakening, I don’t know.”

At the same time, he acknowledged that there are “a lot of different factors in the economy right now,” including positives like robust corporate profits as well as negatives like lower consumer confidence.

As for what comes next for the economy: “We just have to wait and see,” Dimon said.

Not that you should wait to act. As investors, we should always be prepared for worst-case scenarios.

If you are nervous about the future, here are some ideas to consider.

Protecting against a faltering economy

One of the best ways to protect your savings is having money in different types of investments: ideally, ones that can go up when others are going down. For example, stocks tend to do poorly when there’s economic uncertainty.

One investment that thrives in this scenario: gold. Not too much. Most experts recommend you never put more than 15% of your long-term assets into gold.

Also keep in mind that not everyone in the gold business is on the up-and-up. Be careful who you deal with.

Lear Capital stands out as one of the most trusted names in the precious metals industry.

With over 25 years of experience and more than $3 billion in precious metals transactions, Lear Capital has helped more than 100,000 Americans secure their retirement with physical gold and silver. They make the process simple and easy — whether you’re rolling over funds from a 401(k) or IRA, or making a direct purchase — and offer one-on-one guidance from experienced account representatives who specialize in gold IRAs.

Plus, Lear’s A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and “Excellent” rating on Trustpilot mean you can invest with confidence.

What really sets Lear apart is their commitment to transparency and education. Every client gets a free investor kit, access to real-time pricing, and a 24-hour risk-free purchase guarantee — a level of service rare in the industry. Plus, get up $15,000 in bonus metals with a qualified purchase, along with zero trade fees for an entire year.

If you have at least $20,000 in savings or in a qualified retirement account, Lear Capital will help you roll over those existing assets into precious metals like silver and gold.

Gold has been hitting record highs. Take a look and see what you think?

A Vanguard study found that, on average, a hypothetical $500,000 investment over 25 years would grow to $1.7 million if you manage it yourself, but more than $3.4 million if you work with a financial advisor. That’s twice as much!

Even if you don’t want help picking investments, an advisor can help lower your tax burden, create a comprehensive financial plan, maximize your Social Security, help with estate planning and making sure you’re on the right track. They can also be there in case one day, you’re not.

If you’ve got at least $100,000 in investments, check out a free service called SmartAsset. You fill out a short questionnaire and instantly get matched with up to three vetted financial advisors in your area, all legally bound to work in your best interests.

Using SmartAsset only takes a few minutes, and in most cases you’ll be offered a free consultation.

Nothing to lose and lots to potentially gain. Take a minute and check it out.
