If you’re convinced a beach vacation would drain your savings account, think again. According to a recent analysis by NerdWallet, which examined data from travel booking platform Expedia, you don’t need to choose between financial stability and feeling sand between your toes.

The key to a great, cheap beach vacation is knowing where to go, understanding when to book and maximizing every dollar once you’re there.

Melanie Fish, travel expert for Hotels.com and Vrbo, told NerdWallet:

“Our analysis of Hotels.com and Vrbo data shows that travelers can still find beachfront hotels and beach house rentals under $300 a night in top destinations across the U.S., Europe, and Southeast Asia.”

Following are cheap beach destinations based on NerdWallet’s analysis.

1. Gulf Shores, Alabama

Alabama’s beaches rival Florida’s at a fraction of the cost.

Time your visit during the National Shrimp Festival in October for free entertainment and cheap local seafood. The area’s state parks offer camping if you want to minimize costs, with full beach access included.

2. Outer Banks, North Carolina

According to NerdWallet, Outer Banks offers affordable vacation rental homes that can sleep groups or entire families.

And buying groceries and cooking at least half of your meals can save you money. Plus, most attractions are either free — like beaches and lighthouse viewing — or low-cost, making this ideal for budget-conscious travelers.

3. West Palm Beach, Florida

West Palm Beach might sound like millionaire territory, but smart timing changes everything. Expedia found an average nightly rate of just under $200 for hotels in mid-August.

Book your stay in downtown West Palm Beach rather than on Singer Island or Palm Beach proper. You’ll get urban amenities, walkable neighborhoods and easy access to multiple public beaches.

4. Panama City, Florida

Panama City transforms into a budget traveler’s paradise during off-peak months. With 27 miles of shoreline, you’re not fighting for beach space, and according to Expedia data, the average rate of a hotel stay is around $100 in mid-August.

To save money, skip the beachfront hotels and stay a few blocks inland. Load up on groceries at the local market instead of eating out every meal. St. Andrews State Park offers some of the area’s best beaches.

International beach bargains

Despite expensive flights, some overseas coastal destinations can actually be more affordable than some domestic beach resorts, according to NerdWallet.

  • Thailand: Pattaya and Phuket are two locations where you can find great beaches along with affordable meals and accommodations.
  • Greece: The North Aegean islands in Greece offer Mediterranean beaches where you can book a stay at an average nightly rate of under $200. Crete, a much larger island of Greece, also has affordable vacation rentals.
  • Dominican Republic: Stay in Puerto Plata, where you’ll find Caribbean beaches just a short flight from the East Coast. While all-inclusive resorts dominate tourist zones, staying in the city and eating locally can help you cut costs and find rich cultural experiences.

Making your money-smart beach vacation happen

Your biggest opportunity for savings comes before booking anything. The right credit card with travel rewards can help fund your vacation.

Also, set price alerts on Google Flights and Hopper months before traveling. When comparing accommodations, factor in resort fees, parking charges and potential meal savings from having a kitchen.

Finally, consider traveling in shoulder season, in spring or fall, for ideal weather and lower rates compared to peak summer prices. You’ll also enjoy fewer crowds and better service.

The beach vacation you’ve been postponing doesn’t have to remain a distant dream. With strategic planning and a budget-friendly destination, you could be walking barefoot on warm sand sooner than you imagine.
