Elon Musk Blasts Senate Tax Bill: What You Can Do If He’s Right

Elon Musk blasted the U.S. Senate’s latest version of President Trump’s tax and spending bill in a June 28 post on X, calling it “utterly insane.”

He claimed the bill “will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country,” while favoring “industries of the past” and harming “industries of the future,”  according to Reuters.

Musk didn’t specify which parts of the bill prompted his reaction. As policy details emerge, his comments contribute to growing concerns about how the legislation may impact innovation and employment.

President Trump has urged Republicans to pass The Big Beautiful Bill by July 4, putting pressure on lawmakers to act quickly.

Musk’s remarks serve as a reminder that policy shifts can have a swift impact on jobs, paychecks, and personal finances.

Strengthen your financial foundation

These simple steps can help protect your income and savings, regardless of which changes take shape.

  1. Check your emergency savings. Aim to keep three to six months of expenses in a high-yield savings account. If you work in a tech-driven or emerging industry, building a larger cushion may help you manage through slowdowns or restructuring.
  2. Maximize tax-advantaged accounts. Until new tax rules are finalized, the current system remains in effect. Contribute to a 401(k), IRA, or HSA to lower your taxable income and grow savings while the rules remain unchanged.
  3. Diversify your income. Depending on your field, side income from freelance work, consulting, or part-time projects can offer protection. A second income stream can help mitigate financial risk if hiring slows or business conditions change.

Monitor industry momentum

While he didn’t name specific sectors, fields like artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, and renewable energy often fall under that label.

If tax incentives shift toward older industries, future-focused companies may see tighter margins or slower hiring.

Now is a good time to assess your industry’s current standing. Staying informed about funding trends and political developments can help you plan for the next move, before it’s urgent.

Take low-risk action now

It’s too early to know how the final bill will look or whether Musk’s predictions will play out. But there’s no downside to getting organized.

Check your tax withholding. Review your employer benefits. Consider scheduling a check-in with a financial advisor to discuss your financial situation. These small adjustments may help you respond quickly if new rules take effect later this year.

Preparation Beats Prediction

With just days until President Trump’s July 4 deadline, it’s unclear whether Congress will pass the bill or how much of it will remain in its current form.

Even if the legislation moves quickly, the most valuable steps you can take now are long-term: build savings, reduce risk, and stay adaptable.

These moves matter whether this bill passes or not, and they’ll matter just as much the next time change is on the horizon.
