The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency need for blood donations.

To encourage people to donate this month, the nonprofit is offering donors an online code to claim a free $5 Amazon gift card through Aug. 31.

The Red Cross explains on its Facebook page:

At times, blood and platelets are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in, which impacts the ability to rebuild the blood supply. If you are eligible to donate blood or platelets, we still need your help!

The Red Cross also requests that you make an appointment to donate. You can do so by visiting the American Red Cross website or downloading its free Blood Donor App, which is available for Apple iOS and Android devices.

If you donate this month, you will be emailed a code to claim your free $5 Amazon gift card a few weeks later.

If you have type O negative blood, note that this August blood drive is not your only chance to score an Amazon gift card for donating.

The Red Cross is offering free gifts to people with type O negative blood who donate multiple times during the 2016 calendar year.

The organization’s website explains why this universal blood type “is always in demand”:

“When a patient shows up with minutes to live and there is no time to determine blood type, emergency personnel reach for your type O negative blood! … With less than 7% of the U.S. population having O negative blood, hospitals depend on frequent blood donations from donors [with this blood type].

Type O negative blood donors who donate at least three times this year will be eligible for a $10 Amazon gift card.
