YouTube has unveiled a set of new tools, many of which were previously exclusive to paid subscribers.
One big improvement is the Miniplayer, which allows users to navigate the app while watching a video. The player is bigger than the thumbnail that is currently used in the app. Users can also move it around the screen and access standard controls, such as pause and rewind.
Also new to free, non-premium users: YouTube is opening up its sleep timer. You can have the app stop playing videos and turn off your phone on a timer, which will enable you to listen to music or podcasts as you fall asleep.
Third, collaborative playlists. Soon, you’ll be able to share a playlist with anyone. You’ll also be able to change a playlist’s thumbnail — you can make your own or use one generated by AI.
And if you’re a frequent speed adjustor, YouTube is giving you a slider you can use to change playback speed, without needing to select a specific speed from a list of common values.
Other new features include badges that can be used to show when you’re a top viewer of a YouTuber’s work or if you’ve completed a quiz.
YouTube is also changing how it looks. The landscape mode will feature larger thumbnails, and the app will also be adjusting its colors a bit.
