“From a public safety perspective, it’s a little alarming that the people who report using a cellphone while driving the most are the persons who are the worst at multitasking,” said study co-author David Sanbonmatsu, a psychologist at the University of Utah.

The study was based on around 275 college students, asking them to rate their impulsiveness, how often they multitask, and how good they think they are at it.

Then researchers had them juggle multiple mental tasks – doing math while remembering a sequence of letters – and found the ones who claimed to multitask most often were the worst performers, easily distracted.
