Jeff Bezos is getting married to Lauren Sánchez in Venice on June 27, according to TODAY. While the weekend-long celebration features foam parties, private yachts, and five-star hotels, it may not be as excessive as it seems, at least not for a billionaire.
According to MarketWatch, cost estimates for the event range from $10 million to $80 million. Using a midpoint of $50 million, that’s about 0.0227 percent of Bezos’s net worth and roughly 0.0714 percent of his projected annual earnings, based on an estimated $8 million per hour from Amazon stock.
For most Americans, their weddings are far more financially extravagant, just not in absolute terms.
The average American couple is more extravagant
Well, in relative terms, anyway. According to The Knot, the average American wedding cost $33,000 last year. Destination weddings rise to nearly $40,000. At the same time, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates median household income at $80,600. That means many couples are spending more than 40 percent of their annual income on one day.
MarketWatch notes that the typical breakdown includes $12,200 for a venue, $2,900 for a photographer, and $2,100 for a wedding dress. Add in flowers, DJs, transportation, and meals, and the costs add up quickly.
This is not just a case of budgeting poorly. The pressure to host an “Instagram-worthy” celebration has grown dramatically in recent years. Couples may not consider themselves extravagant, but the numbers suggest otherwise.
When weddings lead to lasting debt
According to a March 2024 U.S. News survey, 56 percent of newlyweds took on debt to pay for their wedding, with 39 percent relying on credit cards and 18 percent on personal loans; many also received loans from family to cover expenses.
Starting a marriage in debt creates stress that lingers far beyond the honeymoon. Financial strain is one of the most common sources of conflict in relationships. And overspending on a single day can delay or derail larger financial goals.
If that $33,000 were invested instead of spent, it could potentially grow to more than $250,000 over 30 years. This estimate assumes a 7% annual return, which aligns with long-term stock market averages reported by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. While there are no guarantees, it puts the true cost of a one-day celebration into long-term perspective.
Watch for wedding markups
Wedding services often cost more than other events. The difference usually comes down to expectations. You could try not mentioning “wedding” when booking, but be mindful that weddings tend to require more time, staffing, customisation, and coordination — factors that raise costs.
If you’re quoted a higher price, it may reflect more than just the word wedding. Vendors often build in time for planning meetings, rehearsal walk-throughs, and last-minute changes. You’re also more likely to expect hands-on support, professional backup, and things to go perfectly on the day.
Trying to avoid wedding-specific pricing might save money, but it can also mean less help than you actually need. Be realistic about the type of support your event requires, and ask detailed questions about what is included. Paying a little more may be worth it for peace of mind and smooth execution.
How to keep your wedding costs under control
Some of the most memorable weddings take place in backyards, parks, or town halls. A modest budget can still deliver a meaningful experience if you focus on what matters most.
Start with a cash-based budget—what you can realistically afford without going into debt. If your number is $5,000, that’s your baseline. Choose your top priorities, whether that’s good food, great music, or professional photos, and plan around them.
There are plenty of ways to save without compromising the experience. Hosting your wedding on a weekday or during the off-season can reduce venue costs. Using seasonal flowers from local growers can lower your floral budget. And hiring students or newer vendors for photography or music may offer great value.
Self-catering is another option if you or your family are up for the challenge. Even preparing part of the meal — such as desserts or sides — can significantly reduce expenses.
Meanwhile, in Venice
According to Reuters, the Bezos-Sánchez wedding is expected to host between 200 and 250 guests, with approximately 90 private jets and 30 water taxis transporting attendees to the festivities. Local protests have targeted the scale and symbolism of the wedding. Security concerns and activist pressure led organizers to relocate the event from a central Venetian venue to a more private area.
The wedding has drawn international attention. But the bigger story may be this: While critics point to billionaire excess, average couples are routinely spending beyond their means. For Bezos, $50 million is a fraction of his income. For everyday Americans, $10,000 may be more than they can comfortably afford.
Make sure your wedding is a celebration, not a financial sacrifice. Spend within your means. Invest in your relationship. And resist the pressure to prove anything to anyone else.
