Credit card rewards seem like they should be easy wins. Spend money, get perks. But in reality, maximizing those rewards sometimes takes strategy.

From poor redemption choices to overlooked fees, these six common pitfalls can wreck your returns and cost you far more than you earn.

If you’re looking for a rewards card that goes beyond points and cash back, this crypto-earning credit card lets you build an investment portfolio while you spend. Get a $200 bonus in bitcoin or 50+ other cryptos after spending $3000 in the first 90 days. Enjoy up to 4% instant rewards with no annual fee or foreign transaction fees. Start building your portfolio just through everyday purchases.

1. Redeeming for the wrong rewards

Not all redemption options are created equal. Choosing gift cards, merchandise, or random retail items often cuts your points’ value in half — or worse.

Whenever possible, opt for travel bookings or statement credits, which typically deliver the best value. Check your card’s redemption chart to see where you’re getting the most value.

Want more value from your rewards? Instead of low-return options like gift cards, consider long-term diversification. Companies like Fundrise let you start investing in real estate and venture capital with as little as $10. Note: This is a testimonial in partnership with Fundrise. 2. Points expiration

Rewards don’t last forever. Some issuers wipe out your points if your account goes inactive or you fail to earn or redeem within a certain time frame.

Don’t let your hard-earned perks vanish. Set a calendar reminder to use your points or make a small purchase to reset the clock.

Staying on top of your finances, including reward expirations, can really pay off. With SoFi Checking, you can track spending and earn a competitive APY on your emergency savings, plus a cash bonus for new members who set up direct deposit. (May change without notice.)

Earn up to 4.40% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) on one SoFi Savings account with a 1.10% APY Boost (added to the 3.30% APY as of 10/20/26) for up to 6 months. Open your first SoFi Checking and Savings account between 10/20/26 and 12/31/27, then within 60 days of account opening receive an eligible direct deposit OR $5,000 or more in qualifying deposits. You must maintain eligible direct deposit or $5,000 in qualifying deposits every 31 days to keep the Boost, for up to 6 months. Rates variable, subject to change.

Terms apply at sofi.com/banking. SoFi Bank, N.A. Member FDIC.

3. Missing out on category bonuses

Some credit cards offer elevated rewards, often 3% to 5%, in specific spending categories like groceries, gas, or restaurants. These bonus rates can rotate every few months and may require manual activation.

If you don’t use the right card for the right purchase, you could be missing out on valuable rewards. A little planning can go a long way.

Reducing monthly costs can help you take better advantage of those reward opportunities. If you’re still paying over $15 a month for cell service, click here to save a bundle and put that extra cash toward things that you care about.

4. Paying interest on your rewards card

Earning 2% cash back does not help if you are paying 20% interest. Carrying a balance on a high-APR rewards card can wipe out any perks you earn and leave you worse off.

Pay in full each month to get the most from your rewards or use a lower-interest card for big purchases.

If you want a card that delivers more than points, consider one built for pet parents. The Nibbles Pet Rewards Credit Card combines rewards benefits and built-in pet insurance.

  • Built-in pet insurance for one eligible dog or cat.
  • Up to $20,000 per year in coverage*, included.
  • Up to 80% reimbursement rate after the deductible*.
  • Earn 3x Pet Points on pet and vet purchases.
  • No annual fee.

See if you pre-qualify with no impact to your credit score.

*Check your state for exact coverage and pricing details.

Nibbles is not a bank. The Nibbles Card is issued by Lead Bank. Other fees and T&Cs apply. Rewards & pet insurance offered by Nibbles, not Lead Bank. Base pet insurance policy paid for one eligible pet by Nibbles. See nibbles.com for details.

5. Not meeting the sign-up bonus terms

That $200+ welcome offer can disappear fast if you don’t meet the spending requirement within the timeframe — often just 90 days.

Make sure you understand the rules before applying. Plan your purchases so you hit the threshold without overspending.

Getting the most from sign-up rewards starts with a plan. The same mindset can help you make smarter long-term financial decisions, too. If you’ve got at least $100,000 in investments, SmartAsset can connect you with up to three vetted financial advisors to help you make the most of every financial move.

6. Ignoring annual fees

Premium cards come with premium perks — and premium costs. But if you’re not using enough travel credits, lounge access, or other benefits, that $95+ fee eats into your rewards.

Do the math each year: Are you earning enough to justify the cost? If not, consider switching to a no-annual-fee card or downgrading to a lower-tier option from the same issuer. There’s no reason to pay for perks you’re not actually using.

Losing money on unused card perks isn’t the only way your finances can take a hit. If you’re also carrying more than $20,000 in unsecured debt, National Debt Relief offers trusted, free advice to help you regain control.

Don’t let your rewards go to waste

Maximizing credit card rewards takes more than swiping and hoping for the best. From smarter redemptions to fee awareness, avoiding these buzzkills can help you pocket serious value year after year.

Take a few minutes to review your habits. Your wallet will thank you.
