I’m a Costco fan, but I always check my bank balance before I go, and keep a running mental total as I load my cart. Otherwise, it’s too easy for me to overspend.

It’s not that Costco is overpriced for what you get. But when a store lines their entryway with flat-screen TVs and can’t keep gold bars in stock, you know it’s easy to go overboard.

But thankfully, Costco has plenty of lower-priced items, too. Here are my favorite items to buy at Costco these days that won’t break the bank.

Battery storage case

Clean out that junk drawer, and find a new home for all those assorted batteries that are clogging it up. The Battery Daddy storage case holds 180 batteries (not included), including AAA, AA, 9-volt, C, coin cells and Ds. It also includes a battery tester, plus latches securely to avoid a battery-tastrophe.

Note: This item is on sale — $5 off — through Dec. 3.

Down jacket

This elegant down jacket will keep you warm and dry in wintry weather, and is stylish to boot. Choose from four colors, and sizes up to 3X. Zippered pockets will keep your hands warm or your possessions safe.

Note: This jacket is eligible for a broader offer: If you spend at least $100 on clothing or shoes from Costco’s website through Dec. 12, you will save $30. Or, if you spend at least $200 on such items online, you will save $70.

Faux fur throw

Keep cozy all year with a faux fur throw. It’s reversible, and you can choose from one of five colorful prints, then flip it over for a soft ivory faux fur look. The polyester blanket is machine washable, too.

Note: This item is on sale — $5 off — through Dec. 10.

Pyrex mixing bowl set

The winter holidays may have reminded you that you’re short on good-sized bowls for storing leftovers – especially ones with lids that fit. A set of four lidded Pyrex bowls, which double as mixing bowls, will refresh your cupboards and prep your kitchen for the next big family dinner.

Kids’ touchscreen gloves

Winter can be a wondrous playground for kids, but these gloves work with touchscreens, letting them keep their hands warm while also remaining able to answer your calls and texts. They come in three kids’ sizes, are made of four-way stretch fleece, and are available in black or pink.

Martha Stewart sheet set

At 82, Martha Stewart is still the queen of U.S. domestic affairs. She’s put her name on this four-piece sheet set, which includes one flat sheet, one fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. Choose from blue, light blue, green or gray. The machine-washable set is wrinkle-resistant and bleach-friendly.

Travel pet blanket and bowl

Our furry canine friends love to be with us, so pamper them while on the go with a travel pet throw and collapsible bowl set. The blanket is plush on one side and a water-resistant fabric on the reverse. The bowl is big enough to quench your pup’s thirst, yet folds up for easy transport.

What to give your new neighbor? Your child’s teacher? Anyone who drops off a gift for you that you weren’t expecting? This Cailler L’Atelier artisan-inspired chocolate gift box may be the answer. The 32 pieces of chocolate come in four gourmet flavors: salted caramel, hazelnut praline, intense raspberry, and rich dark chocolate.

Note: This item is on sale — $4 off — through Dec. 4.
