So everyone who works here was really interested when the American Kennel Club released its annual Most Popular Dogs in the U.S. survey. The big headline? “Lab Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary in the Top Spot.” (This pleased Money Talks News owner Stacy Johnson, who loves his lab mix, Lola.)

But there were some surprises as well: The Beagle (No. 4) and the Bulldog (No. 6) have jumped up a spot. “Not since the early 20th Century has the Bulldog enjoyed such sustained popularity,” says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson.

Here’s the Top 10 list for 2010…

  1. Labrador retriever
  2. German shepherd
  3. Yorkshire terrier
  4. Beagle (No. 5 last year)
  5. Golden retriever (No. 4 last year)
  6. Bulldog (No. 7 last year)
  7. Boxer (No. 6 last year)
  8. Dachshund
  9. Poodle
  10. Shih tzu

The American Kennel Club also announced three new breeds breaking into the Top 100: The Leonberger at 33, the Cane Corso at 51, and the Icelandic Sheepdog at 82.
