Does your Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid make enough noise when backing up? More than 73,000 of the vehicles are being recalled over a pedestrian warning sound issue, federal safety regulators said.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, certain 2023–2025 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles may not emit a loud enough sound when operating in reverse, making them harder for pedestrians to hear and increasing the risk of injury.

“The vehicles may fail to make sufficient pedestrian warning sounds when in reverse,” the agency noted. “As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 141, ‘Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles.'”

Which Models Are Impacted by the Recall?

Per NHTSA, 73,528 vehicles are potentially affected by this recall. The model impacted is:

  • 2023–2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid

The recall numbers are 26TB08 and 26TA08.

What Should Car Owners Do?

Toyota dealers will update the vehicle software for free to correct the pedestrian warning sound. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by late May 2026.

Toyota’s customer service can be reached at 1-800-331-4331.
