In an effort to compete with Amazon, Walmart is considering turning its shoppers into shippers, The Guardian says…
Such an effort would face legal, regulatory and privacy obstacles, but Walmart executives said the scheme is at an early planning stages. […] “This is at the brainstorming stage, but it’s possible in a year or two,” said Jeff McAllister, senior vice president of Walmart US innovations.
Walmart is already testing delivery from two dozen local stores, including same-day delivery at a few of them. But right now it’s done by pros like FedEx, or Walmart’s own employees.
If customers were brought into the mix, they would probably get a discount on their bill, presumably enough to cover gas and make it worth the while. They’d sign up and give their address to Walmart, which would figure out what packages could be dropped off along a reasonable route on the way home.
It’s unlikely the service would be offered at every store. Probably only in metro areas, the story says.
