We Tested the 2026 Lexus RZ. Here’s Who Should Buy It

USA TODAY Network / Reuters

The Lexus RZ is the only fully-electric Lexus SUV model in the Japanese luxury automaker’s American portfolio. Lexus’ EV could pave the way for future Lexus electric SUVs if sales prove that there’s a demand for the RZ.

Lexus produces some of the best-selling luxury SUV models on the market including the NX small SUV and RX midsize SUV. The RZ is a sleek and futuristic-looking electric vehicle that is the pinnacle of Lexus luxury.

USA TODAY Cars got behind the wheel of the 2026 Lexus RZ to see if it could provide real-world value to American drivers who want a more upscale electric family SUV that doesn’t break the bank. Here are some things you should know about the RZ’s performance, driving range, charging speeds and cabin quality.

What Makes the 2026 Lexus RZ Stand Out?

The 2026 Lexus RZ has a unique design language that sets it apart from other EVs in its segment. While it shares some DNA with its cousin, the more affordable Toyota bZ, the RZ has its own identity from its body style to its opulent cabin and innovative features.

EVs tend to cost more than gas and hybrid vehicles in their segment, but the tradeoff is a plethora of futuristic features and a design that’s more modern than even some of the most well-equipped final trim gas and hybrid models. This is the case with the RZ. Its sticker price may shock drivers who are new to the EV space, but this electric family SUV is value-packed, from its sporty performance to its ultra-luxurious cabin.

How Does the Lexus RZ Drive?

The 2026 Lexus RZ comes standard with a single motor powertrain system that produces 221 horsepower and 198 pound-feet of torque. Upper trims like the RZ550e F Sport boast a whopping 402 horsepower.

Lexus’ electric SUV easily switches from reserved to zippy and features Drive Mode Select to choose from a variety of driving settings like ECO and Sport to suit your needs.

The RZ has around 301 miles of maximum driving range, which is solid by today’s standards. Lexus’ electric SUV doesn’t have class-leading range numbers, but it provides more than enough range for drivers properly equipped for EV ownership. During testing, we recharged the RZ from 10% to over 80% of its battery capacity in roughly 30 minutes.

Will the Lexus RZ Fit Your Lifestyle?

The new RZ is a midsize model that is 189.2 inches long, 74.6 inches wide (without mirrors) and 64.4 inches tall. It’s slightly smaller than the RX midsize SUV.

Lexus’ electric SUV seats five and has around 23.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The RZ’s cabin and cargo area do feel more like a small SUV than a midsize model at times, but it has enough interior and trunk space to accommodate most small families.

The RZ has the dimensions of a sportier luxury SUV than the RX, but its smaller dimensions won’t feel like a sacrifice unless more trunk space is a necessity. The EV has 42.1 inches of front leg room and 37.5 inches of rear leg room.

Is the 2026 Lexus RZ Worth It?

The 2026 Lexus RZ starts at $47,295. It comes in six trim levels that offer different powertrains and additional standard features.

2026 Lexus RZ trims:

  • 350e: $47,295
  • 350e Premium: $49,495
  • 450e: $50,795
  • 450e Premium: $52,995
  • 450e Luxury: $58,295
  • 550e F Sport: $58,295

The RZ provides solid value for the money and its segment. Upper trims can get pricey, but plush cabin upgrades and advanced standard features can justify choosing a higher trim level for some drivers.

It competes against rivals like the Cadillac Lyriq and Acura ZDX. The Lyriq has the best base model performance specs of the three, but the RZ has the cheapest price-to-entry of the three models and Lexus is known for its reliability.

Who Should Buy the 2026 Lexus RZ?

The new RZ is primarily for fans of the Lexus brand looking to make the switch to an electric vehicle. Toyota and Lexus have been slower to produce a competitive EV than many competitors like Tesla, Hyundai, General Motors and Ford, but the RZ is a fine addition to the Japanese luxury automaker’s portfolio.

If you’re new to electric vehicles and have never owned a Lexus, or aren’t a fan of the brand, there are now plenty of different midsize electric SUVs to choose from in 2026. The Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 have earned great reviews, though they may lack the refinement drivers are looking for in a luxury model.

If you’re a long-time Lexus lover that’s excited for the company’s latest electric SUV, the RZ doesn’t disappoint. It delivers on performance, charging speed, cabin quality and general ease-of-use.
