A supplement meant to give gymgoers a boost before a workout has been recalled because it contains an illegal, amphetamine-like substance, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Leader Formulas LLC initiated a recall of its Rapture pre-workout powders Oct. 6 after FDA testing found the synthetic stimulant DMAA. The substance is banned in the United States and several other countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the European Union.
The FDA warns DMAA could lead to cardiovascular problems, including heart attack. No adverse reactions had been reported to Leader Formulas as of Oct. 7.
Which Pre-Workout Powders Were Recalled?
The affected products were sold nationwide in retail stores and through the company’s website between Jan. 29, 2025, and May 25, 2026. All bear lot No. 260327-4:
- RAPTURE Preworkout Rainbow Twist; UPC 710154236506
- RAPTURE Preworkout Electric Lemonade; UPC 710143 236513
- RAPTURE Preworkout Berry Mojito; UPC 710154236544
What Is DMAA?
DMAA, or dimethylamylamine, is a synthetic stimulant related to amphetamine. It was once used as a nasal decongestant but was withdrawn from the market in the 1980s.
1,3-DMAA, the type found in the recalled powders, is also called methylhexamine. It is banned for use in U.S. dietary supplements but still appears in products marketed for energy and performance.
DMAA’s effects are not well understood, and the FDA recognizes no valid medical use for it. Reported side effects can include a racing heartbeat, high blood pressure, headache, shortness of breath and chest tightness. It may appear on labels under names including geranamine, 4-methyl-2-hexanamine and 2-amino-4-methylhexane, as well as variations of dimethylamylamine and methylhexanamine.
What Should You Do With Recalled Powder?
Do not consume the recalled products. Return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The FDA says consumers should avoid products containing DMAA and report them to the agency.
