The dog days of summer offer freebies for everyone — including your pooch! This month, you can also score perks ranging from a free root beer float to a gratis game of bowling.
Enjoy the following freebies, available only during the month of August.
Free Starbucks Macchiato – Aug. 3-7

Stop by Starbucks from 2-5 p.m. on Aug. 3-7 and you’ll get one free Macchiato drink when you purchase one.
This “Meet the Macchiatos” promotion is geared around Aug. 6, which is International Friendship Day. As Starbucks says, “Grab your bestie and swing by for a cool drink — and enjoy one on us.”
Free sandwich at Firehouse — Aug. 5

Donate to a good cause, and you can sink your teeth into a free Firehouse Sub. On Aug. 5, Firehouse is taking donations of 24-pack bottled water in exchange for a free medium sub. The water will be donated to first responders and community groups that will give the bottles to people in need.
Free paper shredding at Staples — through Aug. 5

If you’ve got a box of papers that need shredding, head over to Staples and slice up those documents for free. Staples has a coupon on its website for free shredding of up to 2 pounds of paper through Aug. 5. The in-store coupon code is 40543.
Free root beer float at A&W — Aug. 6

Summer is full of special days that offer cool freebies to take the edge off the hot weather. Aug. 6 is National Root Beer Float Day, and A&W will celebrate with a free small root beer float when you make any purchase.
When you get your float, A&W encourages you to make a contribution to the Disabled American Veterans. A free float and a worthy cause — can’t beat that combination!
Free entrée at Olive Garden — ongoing

Every so often, Olive Garden offers a mouthwatering deal: Buy one entrée, take another one home. Right now, the restaurant again is offering this freebie “for a limited time.”
You can find a list of the qualifying entrees at the website.
Free bagel for your dog at Einstein Bros. — Tuesdays through Aug. 29

Einstein Bros. Bagels believes your four-legged friend deserves an August freebie, too. Stop by the store on Tuesdays between now and Aug. 29 and you’ll get a free doggie bagel with any purchase. This gratis grub will really get tails wagging!
Free bowling — Aug. 12

Lace up your bowling shoes and head down to select bowling alleys for a free game on Aug. 12, National Bowling Day. This National Bowling Day website lists many bowling alleys offering a free game when you download bowling emojis. But check with your favorite local alley to see if it is also participating in the big day.
Tax-free back-to-school supplies and other items — throughout August

The only certain things in life are death and taxes — and in August, even the tax man takes a holiday. As we reported last month, several states are hosting days where sales tax will be suspended when you purchase school supplies and some other items.
While these goods aren’t technically free, they are tax-free. Most of these tax holidays are scheduled for August. Read our story to find out more.
Free entrance to national parks — Aug. 25

The National Park Service is celebrating its 101st birthday by offering free admission to all parks on Aug. 25. This is just one of several days during the year when you can explore the parks for free.
While admission is free for all 400 national park sites on Aug. 25, you can get the most bang for your buck by visiting one of the 124 park sites that normally charge an entrance fee. The other parks are free year-round.
Free $10 reward at JCPenney — through Aug. 31

Download the JCPenney app between now and Aug. 31 and you will receive a $10 reward good toward your next purchase. However, if you already have downloaded the app in the past, you’re ineligible for the freebie.
