How Much State Legislators Are Paid Across the Country

As Tax Day approaches and Congress seems to struggle to agree on anything, you may be asking yourself whether the politicians in Washington are earning their keep. But don’t forget your local elected officials. Your state legislators could have as much influence on your day-to-day existence as the federal government does.

How much are you paying these men and women to pass laws that affect you and your family? It all depends. Some states have full-time legislatures that demand full-time hours while others have part-time hours and part-time pay.

Just as there are 50 states, there are 50 ways to pay legislators. Here’s what your state lawmakers received in 2017, according to data compiled by the National Conference of State Legislatures.
