Welcome to Ask Money Talks News, a series answering financial questions submitted by Money Talks Newsletter subscribers.
In this installment, we’re talking about what happens — or doesn’t happen, in this case — when you claim Social Security benefits based on the work history of another person.
Barbara asks Money Talks News:
“Does my husband get notified when I claim his Social Security benefit?”
Thanks for your question, Barbara. The answer is no, your spouse will not be notified of how your Social Security benefit is calculated.
I’m assuming you’re talking about claiming your spousal benefit, which would be calculated based on your husband’s earnings record. But the same goes for ex-spousal benefits, which are based on the record of a former spouse: The Social Security Administration won’t notify your ex if you claim ex-spousal benefits.
Anyone curious about claiming ex-spousal benefits can learn more about the process in “5 Steps to Claim Your Ex-Spouse’s Social Security Without Telling Them.”
